We are currently seeking a qualified Biomedical Scientist for a band 6 position in our Biochemistry Department, based at our Sutton site. While the primary location is Sutton, rotations to our Central London sites in Chelsea and Cavendish Square may be required to meet service needs.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in an On-Call rota with comprehensive training provided, and offering competitive sessional rates with recovery time.

In this role, you will have access to cutting-edge analytical platforms, including Ortho Vitros, Sebia, Optilite and Exent systems. While previous experience with these analysers is beneficial, it is not a requirement as you will have the opportunity to work alongside experts in Blood Sciences with full training provided.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will deliver a fit for purpose Blood Sciences service and is primarily responsible for the analytical service. The post holder will rotate through all sections of the department. The key working
relationships will be with staff in Biochemistry, but the post holder will be expected to liaise with staff throughout pathology and the Trust. There will be frequent occasions when the post holder takes sole

responsibility for work, for example when no senior staff are present.

  • To assist in maintaining adequate stock of all reagents and consumables, through accurate record
keeping and reporting to senior staff.
  • To ensure that all logbooks / forms relating to calibrators, controls and reagents are maintained.
  • To receive and handle samples in accordance with SOPs within laboratory and reception areas.
  • To enter data accurately onto laboratory and hospital information systems in accordance with local procedures.
  • To participate in the on-call rota which requires staff to work alone and unsupervised for extended periods dealing with all investigative requests and reporting results. To be able to carry out basic
troubleshooting of the equipment whilst on call. Please note that participation in the on-call service is voluntary but expected.
  • To actively participate in annual appraisal

Person specification

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registration
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • Diploma or Degree level study (or equivalent)
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of post registration study or specialist diploma

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience working as a specialist BMS in Biochemistry
  • Experience working as a registered BMS in areas of relevant diagnostic laboratory
  • Able to work to deadlines
  • Able to understand / follow SOPs
  • Able to technically validate laboratory results
  • Full understanding of EQA & IQC and their implications
  • Full understanding of laboratory H&S procedures
Desirable criteria
  • Able to perform basic training

Skills Abilities/knowledge

  • Ability to demonstrate self-motivation
  • Ability to make decisions, organise and prioritise
  • Evidence of commitment to customer care initiatives
  • Knowledge and understanding of quality issues
