Head of QA

We are seeking a highly experienced and strategic Head of Quality Assurance to lead and elevate our QA function. This role will oversee the testing strategy, quality standards, and processes across all development teams, ensuring the delivery of high-quality software products.
You will manage QA Leads, drive innovation in testing methodologies, and advocate for quality at the leadership level. The ideal candidate is an experienced leader with strong technical expertise, exceptional communication skills, and a passion for continuous improvement.
What you'll be doing- Strategic Leadership
- Define and execute the overall QA strategy, aligning with the organization’s goals and development processes.
- Drive innovation in testing methodologies, tools, and practices to ensure high-quality software delivery.
- Develop a roadmap for the QA function, including automation strategies, scalability, and process improvements.
- Team Management
- Directly manage QA Leads, providing mentorship and oversight to ensure alignment with strategic objectives.
- Oversee career development, performance management, and hiring for the QA team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
- Scale the QA team as needed, ensuring the right balance of skills and resources.
- Process & Standards Ownership
- Evolve and enforce quality standards, frameworks, and processes across all Squads.
- Lead the implementation of best practices for testing, including functional, regression, integration, performance and user acceptance.
- Identification and implementation of NFRs and appropriate testing strategy
- Promote the use of metrics (e.g., defect density, test coverage, cycle time, Disaster Recovery and Mean Time to Recovery) to measure and improve QA effectiveness.
- Ensure appropriate processes are in place to address defects and minimize reoccurrence.
- Collaboration & Advocacy
- Act as the primary advocate for quality within the organization, ensuring QA priorities are represented at the leadership level.
- Partner with the Development and DevOps teams to drive CI/CD pipelines, ensuring testing is embedded in the development lifecycle.
- Partner with Release Management to ensure releases are tested to organizational standards and are ready for release to clients.
- Risk Management
- Identify risks related to software quality and collaborate with stakeholders to mitigate them proactively.
- Ensure the effectiveness of our defect triage process and so that critical issues are addressed promptly.
- Tools & Technology
- Evaluate and implement tools to ensure the success and efficient operation of the team.
- Reporting & Communication
- Provide regular updates to senior leadership on quality metrics, major risks, and progress against goals.
- Ensure clear communication of testing progress, results, and issues across Squads and stakeholders.
- Service orientated microservice architecture.
- Services written primarily in Java17 and Spring with some services written in NodeJS, Go and Python.
- AI service uses external LLMs via AWS Bedrock.
- Frontend built with Typescript and React.
- Backed by several datastores including ElasticSearch, MongoDB and and PostgreSQL.
- Build and deployment using Github Actions and Drone with SonarCloud.
- Deployed to Kubernetes clusters running on AWS infrastructure.
Requirements
What we're looking for in you- 10+ years of experience in Quality Assurance, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
- Proven experience managing and scaling QA teams, including managing managers.
- Strong understanding of Agile methodologies and their impact on quality assurance.
- Hands-on experience with test automation tools and frameworks (e.g., Playwright, Selenium, Cypress, etc.).
- Expertise in CI/CD pipelines and integrating automated testing into the development lifecycle.
- Solid knowledge of functional, performance, security, and regression testing.
- Experience implementing shift-left testing practices.
- Exceptional communication and leadership skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.
- Experience in a highly scalable SaaS or product-driven environment.
- Knowledge of the legal profession.
