Main duties of the job
This post is for a Consultant Paediatrician in Community Child Health and Neurodisability, with the opportunity to take up the role as lead for Safeguarding, SEND and sensorineural hearing loss. You will work closely with other paediatric colleagues to provide safeguarding, (including child protection and Looked after children) and neurodisability services.
Other areas of special interest are encouraged where they are consistent with the department’s responsibilities to deliver and develop services, in alignment with the Trust strategy and vision. You will share the overall clinical responsibility with the other community paediatricians to provide the highest standard of medical paediatric care for our patients.
You will be expected to work within the multidisciplinary team to provide a comprehensive community paediatric service within the Community Child Health service, covering responsibilities related to Clinical Activities (e.g. consultant-led pathways and clinics, triage/screening of referrals, clinical supervision to trainees, MDT clinical discussions or meetings, Child protection medical assessments; Teaching (e.g. departmental teaching, teaching of paediatric trainees rotating within training posts, medical or other clinical students, regional teaching meetings), Management and leadership (e.g. QI and service development, clinical governance, Educational and Management supervision).Please refer to the job description for details of the post and timetable.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
You will be expected to work within the multidisciplinary team to provide a comprehensive community paediatric service within the Community Child Health service, covering responsibilities in the following areas:
Clinical activities- Consultant clinics and related administrative work
- Clinical triage/screening of referrals
- Clinical supervision to trainees
- MDT clinical discussions or meetings
- Any clinical patient-related meetings
- Covering for Child protection medical assessments (excluding sexual abuse) during working hours.
- To contribute to departmental teaching
- To contribute to teaching of paediatric trainees rotating within training posts
- To contribute to teaching of medical or other clinical students particularly in relation to community child health services
- Audit, quality improvement and service development
- Clinical governance
- Educational and Management supervision
You will be also expected to:
- Complete accurate and timely documentation of clinic consultations and care plan.
- To work to the agreed job plan and provide safe effective service and achieve departmental KPIs
- Act as an autonomous, registered practitioner who is legally and professionally accountable for own unsupervised actions guided by the professional code of conduct and Trust guidelines and protocols
- Maintain full registration with a licence to practise with the General Medical Council
- Gain further professional knowledge through accredited courses workshops, study and in-house training programmes to satisfy the credit hours recommended by RCPCH
- To develop organisational knowledge relating to Trust protocols and procedures and adhere to them
- To work within the team to ensure effective risk management by accident/incident reporting, assessing, and controlling risk and ensuring residual risks are added to the Risk Register
- To participate in established Safeguarding Peer Review (and supervision sessions where relevant to role)
- To engage with Children’s Community of Practice in CNWL to develop and provide standard best practice
Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria- MRCP, MRCPCH by examination or equivalent
- Fully registered with the General Medical Council
- On GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT or CESR-CP in Paediatrics at the time of interview
- Higher degree e.g. MSc, MD, MBA, PhD or other higher degree
- DCH, DCCH, or other relevant diplomas
- CCT or equivalent in subspeciality of Community Child Health or Paediatric Neurodisability
Professional Experience
Essential criteria- Achieved the competencies relating to General Paediatric Training, usually after 2 years of General Professional Training in Paediatrics
- Achieved the competencies equivalent to Higher Specialist Paediatric Training, usually 3 years in Community Child Health
- Experience of working as part of and leading a multidisciplinary team
- Up to date with Level 3+ Safeguarding and Child Protection competences within last 3 years
- Ability to supervise trainees for Child Protection Medical Assessments
- Good understanding of health inequalities and the impact of social determinants on children, young people and families
- Experience in other areas relevant to Community Child Health, e.g. General Practice, Child Mental Health, Public Health, Paediatric Neurology, Paediatric Neurodisability
- Specialist experience in one or more particular areas of Community Child Health practice to take a lead role in that area
- Experience in advisory role for SEND and/or safeguarding
- Higher level of training evidence in Social Communication disorders and neurodevelopmental disorders
Leadership&Management
Essential criteria- Capable of working at consultant level in Community Child Health, including working unsupervised and making sound clinical decisions
- Experience of working with multi-disciplinary teams within community child health settings and interagency systems i.e. social care and education
- Participation in and demonstration of understanding of clinical governance, risk management, service planning and quality improvement
- Ability to develop guidelines for departmental clinical use, and lead in service development
- Experience of leading multi-disciplinary teams within community child health settings
- Track record of innovation, service development and change improvement
- Completion of a management or leadership course
- Ability to mentor or coach
- Completed training in conducting medical appraisals
Academic&Teaching
Essential criteria- Demonstrated enthusiasm and experience in undergraduate and postgraduate paediatric teaching
- Demonstrated participation in clinical audit and quality improvement
- Demonstrated participation in departmental teaching
- Formal training in teaching or research
- Record of publications in peer reviewed journals
- Record of presentations at medical conferences
