Director of Finance and Governance

Stratford-upon-Avon

The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust is the independent charity that cares for the world’s greatest Shakespeare heritage sites in the Shakespeare’s home town of Stratford-upon-Avon. It is the global centre for learning about and experiencing the works, life and times of the world’s best-known writer.
Through the five historic Shakespeare family homes, internationally designated museum collections, award-winning learning programmes and digital channels, the charity provides imaginative, immersive and interactive opportunities for people of all ages to get up-close-and-personal with Shakespeare.

It hosts more than three million multi-platform visits annually and runs extensive and impactful learning and engagement programmes.

The Trust is going through a period of change, looking to diversify its income streams, to enable it to deliver ambitious capital investment projects and ensure that it can look to the future with confidence.

As Director of Finance and Governance, you will report into the CEO and work in partnership with senior colleagues covering museums and public programmes, knowledge, strategy and change, and development. In addition to this, you will lead the Trust’s governance framework and ensure effective risk management and audit systems are in place. You will also play a key role in the development and delivery of capital investment projects. Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Shaping the effective development of the Trust’s strategic, financial, business and resource plans, ensuring best use of all assets, whilst pursuing value creating financial opportunities
  • Leading financial modelling and analysis to support the development of long-term strategic initiatives, business plans for capital projects and financial models for core activities
  • Identifying and delivering ongoing improvements to medium and long-term strategic plans and budget proposals
  • Managing and driving improvements to the Trust’s investment, treasury and property management portfolio
  • Supporting and guiding the CEO and Board of Trustees on the principles of good governance and ensuring the Trust’s governance framework is fit for purpose
  • Taking ownership for the risk register and ensuring effective audit systems are in place across all areas of the Trust
The role requires a collaborative finance leader, with strong commercial acumen and the confidence to challenge when required. Whilst applications from candidates with experience in the charitable sector will be welcomed, so will applications from candidates from outside of the sector looking to make a change.

The Trust needs a transformative finance leader, who is looking for an exciting opportunity to lead the organisation through a period of rapid change and deliver tangible, positive outcomes.

Shakespeare Birthplace Trust is passionate about being a truly inclusive organisation. It is fundamental to their belief that Shakespeare should be for everyone and that the range of experience diversity brings is a huge asset to the Trust’s mission.
