Job overview

The key focus of this role is to deliver quality care to patients at ward level through the implementation of an efficient medicines management system. This will include the assessment of patient’s own drugs, original pack dispensing, patient consultation skills, coordinating the supply of discharge medication and oral chemotherapy counselling.

The role will also involve satellite dispensary-based responsibilities, procurement of outsourced, dose banded and compassionate use SACT, as well as scheduling and co-ordinating chemotherapy treatment for patients in our day unit using iQemo.

Main duties of the job
  • Participate in and encourage an open communication climate providing feedback to staff on performance and developmental issues.
  • Actively promote cost-effective purchasing, distribution, storage/ stock control and appropriate use of medicines in the best interests of patients.
  • Optimise usage of patient own drugs (PODs) and patient own drugs at home (POSH) to reduce waste and support continuity of care.
  • Ensure drug histories are obtained for new admissions to support medicine reconciliation.
  • Assist in collection of audit data to monitor service performance.
  • Document medication incidents on Datix according to Trust procedures.
  • To deal with Compassionate use / named patient cancer medicines supply
  • To promote the responsible, safe, and cost-effective provision of medication from the Chemotherapy Services Unit (CSU) with specific responsibility for supply of readymade and outsourced systemic anticancer therapy doses from our dedicated satellite dispensary.
  • Undertake regular meetings with directly managed staff, to support development.
  • Undertake recruitment processes for staff within service areas that adhere to Trust policies including short listing and partaking in interview panels.
  • To support the development and training of all pharmacy staff working on Cancer wards and providing pharmacy services to the cancer day units.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in a hospital pharmacy setting.
  • Significant experience as a pharmacy technician
  • Pharmacy labelling and stock control systems
  • Education & training of staff
  • Medicines management experience in a ward-based setting, e.g. medication history taking, POD assessment etc.
  • Patient consultation skills.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BTEC in Pharmaceutical Sciences /NVQ L3 in Pharmacy or equivalent
  • Registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • Accuracy Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) qualification or working towards.
  • HEE LaSE Medicines Optimisation qualification or equivalent.
Desirable criteria
  • Member of Professional Leadership body Association of Pharmacy Technicians UK.
  • Leadership and Management Qualification, ILM L2 /L3 or equivalent.
