Job overview
The post advertised for a Consultant Paediatrician is a replacement for a substantive post to start from May 2025 (or as soon as possible thereafter). This represents an exciting opportunity to join an established Paediatric Consultant team working at Queen Elizabeth hospital Gateshead.Although this is a General Paediatric consultant post candidates with an additional special interest are encouraged to apply. This might include applicants with a CCT in Community Paediatrics who are looking for a hybrid post. There is also an opportunity for developing leadership roles within the department.
Main duties of the job
The post has up to 10PAs available which includes contributing to the general Paediatric service with some daytime support of the acute service, general Paediatric outpatient clinics and participating in the acute Paediatric consultant on-call rota at the QE Gateshead.Participating in the acute Paediatric consultant on-call rota would include covering the 8 cot Level 1 SCBU as well as general Paediatrics.
Candidates must hold the MRCPCH (UK) or equivalent qualification and have CCT in General Paediatrics or be in an approved training program within 6 months of expected CCT date at time of interview.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Consultant will form part of the Consultant Team and will have a continuing responsibility for the care of the patients in his/her charge and for the proper functioning of the Directorate.
In addition, he or she will, undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his/her patients and with the running of the Directorate.
He/she will be expected to work with local managers and professional colleagues in the efficient running of services and will share with consultant colleagues in the medical contribution to management. Subject to the provision of the terms and conditions of service, he/she is expected to observe the Trust’s agreed policies and procedures drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters and to follow the local and national employment and personnel policies and procedures.
The post-holder will have responsibility for the training and supervision of his/her resident medical staff and will be required to devote time to this activity on a regular basis. If appropriate, the post-holder will be named in the contracts of doctors in training grades as the person responsible for overseeing their training and as the initial source of advice to such doctors on their careers.The post-holder will also be expected to teach medical students and nurses as required. In addition, the Consultant will be expected to undertake appropriate continuing medical education as required.
