We are looking for a Clinical Support Worker/Clinical Support Worker Higher Level with suitable theatre experience or willing to learn the role of a clinical support worker. The successful applicant will work within our busy operating theatre department at The James Cook University Hospital which has 19 theatres in the main operating department, with a 10 bed recovery suite.

Within the theatre suite there are 2 emergency theatres and a dedicated paediatric theatre.

In addition to main theatres there is a Surgical Day Unit which has a 23 hour male and female ward and 3 day surgery operating theatres. We also have a paediatric day unit where children are admitted and discharged on day of surgery. A further 2 theatres are located within the Redcar Primary Care Hospital.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be working within the Head & Neck, Plastics portfolio assisting and caring for patients undergoing surgery, and will have the opportunity to emergency theatre lists covering more specialities.

The role of a clinical support worker higher level within the theatre department is a specialised and extremely interesting and rewarding role. As a support worker you will be directly impacting on the quality of care we provide to patients undergoing a surgical procedure.

Post holders will be appointed at band 2 or band 3 depending upon qualifications.

Band 2 requirements – willingness to undertake all relevant training and qualifications if wishing to develop into a band 3 role.

Band 3 requirements - Numeracy and Literacy Level 2 or GCSE equivalent (A-C/ 4-9)

Care certificate

Level 3 vocational qualification

or

Short courses and completion of

competency workbook equivalent

to Level 3 in a range of patient and

clinical care duties

and/or

Equivalent knowledge and

experience in a range of clinical

care duties equivalent to Level 3;
  • Theoretical knowledge
  • Experience of a range of
care and related procedures
  • clinical observations
  • knowledge of relevant

legislation

There is a clear framework to allow for postholders to develop from a band 2 to band 3 and this includes completion of the qualifications.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication & active listening skills. Ability to adopt appropriate styles & methods of communication.

Qualifications Band 3

Essential criteria

Qualifications Band 2

Essential criteria
  • Must complete the care certificate within the 6 months probationary period and ‘on the job training’; instruction will be provided – this is an NHS entry level requirement.
