Job overview

AMU and the Acute Care of the Elderly Unit are looking for enthusiastic health care support workers who wants to make a difference.

The Acute Medical Unit receives medical admissions from the Emergency Department and the GP. It is an extremely busy unit comprising of 38 beds with 2 assessment/triage trolleys. We have a new unit attached to AMU, the Acute Care of the Elderly Unit (ACE) which provides excellent care for acutely unwell elderly patients.

We are one team and you will be allocated to work in both areas.

Exceptional team working is essential to this role, along with a warm and friendly bedside manner and the ability to work in a high-pressure area. Previous experience in a hospital/acute setting is beneficial but we accept applications from those without hospital care experience.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidates will be responsible for assisting the qualified nurses to meet the basic nursing needs of the patients in their care, as well as working from their own initiative and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced working environment.

You will need to have outstanding communication skills - you will be part of a team of fellow HCSW's, physician's assistants, qualified nurses and nurse practitioners, junior Doctors and consultants. You will be expected to communicate with these members of the team along with liaising with our ward clerks on admissions, transfers and discharges.

Your day to day routine will consist of but is not limited to: meeting patients hygiene and toileting needs, serving meals and assisting patients to eat and drink, taking and recording of vital observations, blood glucose levels, maintaining good levels of stock and PPE, assisting with wound dressings, disposing of hazardous waste safely and correctly and documenting in patients notes.

You will be expected to have a good standard of literacy and numeracy, due to being required to document about the patients skin and the taking and recording of vital signs.

There will be the opportunity to further develop with training and education, we enrol all of our HCSW's on to basic life support training, and there will be opportunities to train to take blood glucose levels.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
