Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to work within the Breast Imaging Team in our Breast Care Centre at Ipswich Hospital as a . Radiology Support Worker (Breast Imaging).

The NHS Breast Screening Programme for East Suffolk and Breast Imaging is part of the Breast Care Centre at Ipswich Hospital.

This post is part time 13.5 hours per week to be worked: Monday, Tuesday and Friday, 8:30am-1pm (subject to change upon needs of the service).

You must possess excellent communication and Information Technology skills, and be a good team player. You will need to be able to work under your own initiative but with a high level of supervision and with good support. Appropriate training will be given.

Main duties of the job
  • To assist the Radiologist with ultrasound examinations and image guided biopsies.
  • To provide an excellent standard of care to women attending for breast imaging.
  • To give appropriate instructions, assistance and information to women attending for examinations.
  • Know when to seek assistance and refer to others.
  • To maintain stock levels and keep the room and trollies clean and tidy.
  • To meet the psychological needs of anxious patients undergoing biopsies and carry out basic nursing procedures to dress puncture sites and give after-care advice.
  • To support patients and relatives who may be in a distressed or anxious state with sensitivity and empathy.
  • Enter data on to the CRIS computer system.
  • To adhere to documented procedures to ensure delivery of a quality service at all times.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • 5 GCSE’s or equivalent, grade C / grade 4 or above – must include English and Maths.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous experience of working as part of a team.
  • Previous NHS experience in a patient care role.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in working in breast screening or imaging.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Ability to acquire and apply technical and practical skills.
  • Ability to follow and carry out instructions.
  • Understand the need for confidentiality.
  • Able to work under supervision and on own initiative.
  • Able to use a PC.
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding of anxieties and fears of patients undergoing procedure
