There are a total of ten theatres at WCH (7 where GA is administered). Anaesthesia is provided for general surgery, urology, obstetrics and gynaecology, orthopaedics, ophthalmic surgery and dentistry with a concentration on day surgery, and short stay surgery.

ITU/HDU

There are six beds on the combined ITU/HDU, which are used flexibly according to patient need. WCH ICU also shows good performance as reflected by ICNARC data. A full range of monitoring and organ support for critically ill patients is available, including circulatory, respiratory and renal support.

There is a significant medical casemix (80%) with the remainder being surgical and trauma. Staffing is consultant led with 1st call provided by a staff grade doctor.

An active Critical Care Outreach Service which is delivered by a team of experienced nursing staff.

As stated above there will be increased cross site working between the two ICUs with contribution from CIC consultants to WCH staffing to reflect the high medical demand of the ICU plus the increased need for patient transfer for major surgery at CIC.

The provision of 24/7 intensive care consultant led service is a high priority for WCH and is reflected in the move to cross site working and in this advertisement. It is also envisaged that resident staffing will be supported by recruitment of Advanced Critical Care nurse Practitioners, the training of whom would be a key role of the successful candidate

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Share with colleagues the role of educational or clinical supervisor to junior doctors in training including induction, provision of supportive formal appraisals, supervision of learning portfolios, and career advice as appropriate.
  • Undertake personal development and mandatory training
  • Participate in clinical meetings and post graduate activities in the Trust.
  • Work closely with other specialist teams
  • Work with managers and professional colleagues to ensure the efficient running of services
  • Assist in the preparation of business plans.
  • Take an interest in research/teaching with participation in projects and courses
The successful applicant will be required to demonstrate a firm commitment to the principles of Clinical Governance including:-
  • Developing and maintaining appropriate systems and practice to ensure effective clinical audit.
  • Attending and contributing to the Trust Clinical Governance Programmes.
  • Ensuring that staff within their area of responsibility are aware of the Trust’s Risk Management Strategy, and that it is implemented
  • Participating in the Trust Clinical Incident Reporting System.
  • Developing a programme of personal continuing medical education and professional development in accordance with the recommendations of the relevant Royal Colleges.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • MBBS or recognised equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • • Relevant PG qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Full GMC/GDC Registration
  • • Shall have completed at least four years’ full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty; or shall have equivalent experience and competencies.
Desirable criteria
  • • Teaching of junior medical staff, nursing staff.
  • • Training in evidence based medicine
  • • Evidence of CPD
  • • Evidence of appraisal and revalidation within GMC guidelines
