Are you looking to develop more specialist skills in the area of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy? This Band 6 Rotational Specialist Physiotherapy post allows you to undertake nine month rotations between MSK Out Patients, Hands, Rheumatology and Trauma and Elective Orthopaedics, as well as develop skills in hydrotherapy.

The successful applicant will need excellent communications skills and will need to demonstrate suitable knowledge and experience in Musculoskeletal specialties relevant to this position, enabling them to work autonomously at a high level, supporting the delivery of our specialist services.

The department has a positive approach to CPD and there is an active in-service training and supervision programme, to help successful candidates prepare for, and excel within their role as clinicians and leaders.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will need to be flexible in order to meet the complex demands of the different services. The applicant should have significant experience in MSK outpatients, Orthopaedics (both Elective and Trauma) and experience in treating Rheumatology and Hand Therapy patients.

Experience working in busy clinic situations and Hydrotherapy is also desirable.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To provide a high quality Physiotherapy service to the clinical areas of Rheumatology Inpatients & Outpatients, MSK Outpatients, Hands and Trauma and Elective Orthopaedics undertaking rotations every 9 months. • To participate in Orthopaedic weekend rota.

  • To perform advanced Physiotherapeutic assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients who may have diverse presentations and complex physical and psychological conditions.
  • To undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner, hold responsibility for own caseload and be responsible for a defined area of the service or a particular patient type, working without direct supervision.
  • Supervision takes the form of regular formal training, clinical reasoning sessions, and peer review and case conferences. Access to advice and support from a more senior physiotherapist is available if required, clinical work is not routinely evaluated

Essential criteria
  • Physiotherapy Qualification
  • HCPC
  • Recent relevant Post Grad Training.

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantial NHS experience
  • Clinical skills encompassing the core areas of exercise therapy, management of pain relief, mobility training and therapeutic handling
  • Evidence of Specialist MSK Knowledge
  • Experience of student and physiotherapy assistant supervision
  • Experience of working in relevant musculoskeletal fields Trauma and Elective Orthopaedics, Rheumatology, Hands and MSK Out Patients).
Desirable criteria
  • Hydrotherapy Experience
  • Experience with patients with dementia, confusion and patients with physical disability
  • Experience of treating Hypermobility and Fibromyalgia
  • Experience of leading and facilitating groups
  • Involvement in audit, research and understanding quality issues.
  • Orthopeadic Weekend working
  • Previous band 6 Experience

  • To deal sensitively with patients who have high levels of anxiety and aggression causes by pain, dementia or limited mobility
  • To be able to frequently care for critically/ terminally/ chronically ill patients and deal with distressing and difficult circumstances often giving unwelcome news regarding limited expectations from rehabilitation
  • Ability to work in a stressful environment and with emotional or aggressive patients and carers
  • Physically fit and able to undertake intense physical effort
