Speciality Doctor - Microbiology

The speciality doctor can expect to get a grasp of how the laboratory functions as well as exposure to a variety of infections, and the range of pathogens which commonly cause them. There will be education as to correct prescribing and control of antibiotic usage, and clinical liaison.
They will also work with the infection prevention team and closely with the laboratory Biomedical Scientist staff and also with the Antibiotic Pharmacists within the Trust. The appointee will work to a weekly timetable, encompassing clinical duties and educational/training activities.
Within these they will take clinical query calls, validate results, and complete infection prevention data returns both locally and for national submission. We provide hospital care for children and adults across Stockport, the High Peak, and beyond, as well as community health services across Stockport.

We are an associate teaching hospital, helping to train doctors and nurses for the future. In our region, we are one of four specialist hospitals for emergency and high risk general surgery; and one of only two orthopaedic departments delivering C-spine surgery (a form of specialist neck surgery) We see 580,000 hospital and community patients a year.
Microbiology Department is situated on the Stepping Hill site and has ISO 15189:2012 accreditation. The Microbiology Laboratory is managed by a BMS Band 8a (Mrs Sadie Macmaster) with ultimate responsibility lying with the Consultant Microbiologist.
The Department provides a service for both the Trust and the GPs of Stockport, Buxton and High Peak. The Microbiology Laboratory receives approximately 230,000 samples a year for processing. Almost 50% of the samples are received from the local General Practitioners.
The laboratory uses the Telepath Laboratory Management System. Electronic ordering and reporting is also in operation throughout the hospital and community settings. If successful this vacancy will require an enhanced DBS check at a cost of £45.50. This cost will be deducted from your first Trust salary In addition to this it will be a condition of your employment that you will join the DBS update service and pay the annual subscription fee of £16.
