How you'll make a difference:

As a Teacher, you will enable a cohort of secondary aged, looked after children to have high aspirations to achieve their very best educational outcomes. You will support the wider network by meeting their statutory responsibilities, ensuring that education is prioritised in all care planning.

What you will be doing:

  • It will be your responsibility to navigate the multi-professional network to ensure barriers to learning and progress are overcome.
  • Regularly, you will monitor and track pupil progress and recommend interventions to enable them to achieve and succeed.
  • You will play an active part in the training delivered by the Virtual School to schools, carers and social care to ensure the education of looked after children and previously looked after children is supported.
  • By liaising with school leaders and key school staff, you will have an impact on the educational progress of pupils, identifying under performance and ensuring safe and secure transitions from primary to secondary schools.
  • You will implement a process of pupil observations where and when appropriate and advise teachers of strategies to promote learning.
  • It will be key for you to act as a mentor for newly appointed designated teachers.

What we need from you:

  • It is essential that you hold a qualified teacher status (QTS) and have substantial, relevant teaching experience of working with disadvantaged children.
  • At times, you may be working with children and young people who demonstrate challenging behaviour. You must have experience of working in this type of environment, with the ability to advise on proactive strategies for managing this within the classroom.
  • To maximise pupil outcomes, you will need to have an understanding and experience of curriculum planning with a clear insight into best practice in teaching and learning.
  • You need to have strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate and build positive relationships with children, young people and other stakeholders.
  • You will be well organised, with the ability to work under pressure whilst maintaining a positive approach and attitude to work.
  • It is essential you can contribute to the well-being and welfare of children, including communicating concerns to relevant colleagues within our multi-disciplinary team.
What you need to know
  • This is a part-time role, working 22.2 hours per week. Your salary will be pro-rated to hours worked.
  • This role is term time only.
  • This is a limited term contract, ending 31st August 2027.
  • This role is hybrid, with a mixture of working at our office in Badminton Road, in schools and working from home.
  • Please note that due to the nature of this role, it is a requirement of employment that an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is obtained.
  • You will be expected to travel throughout the authority and surrounding area so you must have a full, valid driving licence with regular access to a vehicle or have an alternative means of travel.
  • We are also offering this as an internal secondment opportunity, you should first seek your line managers permission before applying.

Interviews will be held on Monday 19th May 2025.

How a career at South Gloucestershire Council is different
  • As part of our benefits package, you will receive generous annual leave (pro rata), employee wellbeing support and you will have access to a range of staff benefits, including eye tests, travel, shopping and leisure activities.
  • We recognise that our diverse team of skilled and dedicated people make us a great place to work. We welcome applications from everyone and ensure that individuals are selected, promoted and developed on the basis of their merits and abilities.
  • We know our team work best when they have balance in their lives, and we offer genuine flexibility to help them achieve that work/life balance.
  • We value our staff as individuals, investing in their careers and we are recognised for the quality, breadth and depth of our training and development offer, which helps make the greatest long-term difference in work.
  • What’s special here is the strength of the team ethos, the support and the training.
  • We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the safety and welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults. Ensuring all our staff are given right skills, knowledge and support to recognise and respond effectively to potential abuse or neglect.
Our teams at South Gloucestershire Council are making a real difference to the lives of people who live, work and learn here.
  • We're building and shaping communities which people are proud of.
  • We're working with the most vulnerable in our community to help them achieve what they want in life.
  • We're investing in our schools to ensure every child and young person in South Gloucestershire achieves their full potential.

We've achieved a great deal, but we need talented and dedicated people to ensure we continue to make a difference.

We’re making a difference, be part of it!
