Apprentice R&D Technician

We are looking for an Apprentice R&D Technician to join our team at SPT Labtech in Melbourn. You will be part of a large, multidisciplinary engineering team helping to develop instruments that are used in cutting edge scientific life science applications.

This is an exciting and fantastic opportunity to learn many aspects of engineering applied to scientific instrumentation development including working on prototype and pre-production instruments, mechanical assembly, pneumatics, electronics, software and low temperature refrigeration.
You will be embedded in the Development team and will become capable of operating, testing, fault-finding and repairing our products. Furthermore, there will be opportunities to get involved in the design and improvement tasks. Full training will be provided and linked to your academic studies during day release at college.

You’ll additionally be receiving mentorship and guidance from a talented and experienced engineering team.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Manual assembly
  • Electrical assembly
  • Machine operation and testing
  • Liaising and assisting with the Manufacturing Department as needed
  • Designing, building and maintaining test rigs

Skills & Attributes

You will:

  • Be willing to learn and want to be part of an exciting multidisciplinary development team
  • Are curious, and driven and will thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Have good practical and hands-on skills
  • Are reliable and punctual and prepared to work according to project demands

The essentials:

  • You will have completed or are about to complete a relevant level 2 or 3 technical qualification (at merit or distinction) or A-levels
  • Wish to continue your education on a part-time basis (day release).
  • Have good analytical and numerical skills.
  • Have resilience, determination, good communication skills (both verbal and written)
  • You will have a minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade 5 and above, including English language, and STEM subjects including mathematics
  • You will be interested in technology, engineering and science

Ideally you will:

  • Have done some relevant work experience
  • Have used common Microsoft computer programs such as Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Have used CAD software and 3D printers
  • Have a hobby that can demonstrate your practical skills
  • Be prepared to go the extra mile when needed
