This is a substantive appointment within the haematology department. We are seeking a full time consultant in haematology with expertise in all aspects of non-malignant haematology, including haemoglobinopathy, ITP and haemostasis, including haemophilia.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to work collaboratively with consultant colleagues to provide an expert general and diagnostic haematology service as part of the non‐malignant haematology team in the laboratory, outpatient and inpatient settings.
Inpatient work will incorporate managing patients with non‐malignant diagnoses (such as sickle cell disease, bleeding disorders including haemophilia and ITP) admitted directly under the post‐holders care as well as providing a consultative service to other specialties.
As a member of a multidisciplinary haemoglobinopathy team, the post holder will also be expected to work in collaboration with the existing consultants, the clinical nurse specialists, clinical psychologist and members of the West London Haemoglobinopathy Coordinating Centre to provide an expertly led comprehensive range of clinical and laboratory services for patients with sickle cell disease and thalassaemia.

This will also include providing support to and oversight of the new sickle cell Hyperacute Unit (ED bypass unit). The post holder will also be part of the general non‐malignant team providing specialist services for disorders including ITP and other autoimmune haematological disorders as well as being actively involved in the provision and delivery of diagnostic services as part of the South West London pathology network.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The appointee will be responsible for the development and maintenance of a high standard of practice of clinical and laboratory haematology.

The duties of the post are:

  1. To work closely with the existing non‐malignant haematology consultant team to provide haematology expertise in the provision of the non‐malignant clinical and laboratory haematology service.
  2. To provide consultant input for clinical and laboratory aspects of the immuno-haematology service and work collaboratively with other consultant colleagues in the delivery of the immune thrombocytopenia purpura (ITP) service.
  3. To work closely with the existing haemoglobinopathy consultants to provide a world class, comprehensive, haemoglobinopathy service, including overseeing and supporting the running of a new sickle cell Hyperacute Unit (ED bypass unit).
  4. To provide leadership for haemoglobinopathy diagnostic services at St. George’s as part of the South West London pathology network, including oversight of the antenatal screening programme.
  5. To develop the department’s non-malignant research portfolio.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
  • Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
  • Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
  • FRCPath or show evidence of equivalent qualification
  • MRCP (or equivalent)
Desirable criteria
  • Higher Degree

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience in diagnostic and clinical haematology
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients with haematological conditions
  • Experience of clinical audit
Desirable criteria
  • Have 6 months experience working in a haemoglobinopathies centre

Knowledge and Other Role Requirements

Essential criteria
  • FRCPath in Haematology or show evidence of equivalent qualification
  • Knowledge of the processes and function of clinical governance
  • Able to take responsibility, show leadership and make decisions
  • Experience of teaching all grades of staff with
  • Experience of service development and quality improvement
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of CPD in non-malignant haematology
  • Training in teaching or training.
