Job overview
We have an exciting opportunity for a Diabetes Clinical Assistant to join our specialist inpatient team within the Elsie Bertram Diabetes Centre at the NNUH. Our Diabetes inpatient specialist team aim to provide both inpatients with a high standard of diabetes care with a view to improving health and reducing length of stay, and ward staff with support and education on diabetes care.The role is mainly based within our inpatient specialist nursing team but may have an opportunity to also support our outpatient team.
We have a firmly established multi-professional approach to care delivery with both Consultant and Specialist Nurses. We aim to educate and inform patients, their families, and carers for them to make choices about their individual health care needs and support them with self-management of their diabetes.
This is a substantive position working 30 hours over 4 weekdays.

Main duties of the job
The Diabetes Clinical Assistant will play a vital role in helping to deliver this service and will be involved in all aspects of patient education including, initiating new therapy/medication, initiating up to date technology available to support their diabetes health, group education, etc.They will also be involved in staff education and support for when they are looking after patients with diabetes.

- Support the DSN team/N.A. team in their work; in outpatient areas ensuring clinics are being processed efficiently and promote the smooth running of the day’s clinics.
- Manage own clinical workload within the given competencies of the post.
- Work efficiently with the multi-disciplinary team in a professional manner at all times.
- Support and promote health education and/or teaching/advice of practical basic clinical skills and diabetes knowledge to patients, their families and carers and other health care professionals where it is deemed appropriate e.g. blood glucose monitoring/injection technique/CGM and pump technical training.
- Organise and assist the N.A. team with the smooth running of the outpatient service on a daily basis.
- Report untoward incidents such as complaints, clinical emergencies, and injury to senior staff.
- Assist in the maintenance of stock of appropriate equipment and approved educational information handouts, liaising with medical representatives.
- Assist with audit and research programmes.
- Answer telephone enquiries when required directing calls to the appropriate specialist within the team.
- Support the DSN inpatient team in their work, providing inpatient diabetes education, assisting with inpatient audit and research

Travelling to work
Staff parking is available onsite; however, this is limited during core working hours. We have more capacity in the evening and at weekends and can usually provide spaces during those hours.
We look to allocate these spaces fairly. Our Travel Office have a set of criteria that staff must meet in order to qualify. If you qualify for a space, you may be placed on a waiting list if we are at full capacity.
The NNUH is served by a number of public buses, and we offer generously discounted monthly passes with First Bus & Konect.
The Costessey Park and Ride runs regularly each day from 06:30 (from P&R) to 20:45 (from NNUH) and this service is free for NHS staff. There is a regular Thickthorn P&R service as well which is free. Applications to the Travel Office are required for this service.We also have a discounted service from the airport P&R if you purchase a bundle. Please see Konect website for further details.
The NNUH host multiple bicycle racks and a salary sacrifice scheme. We also benefit from a Beryl station onsite.

DBS
