The Labour Market Participation and Individual Rights Team is part of the Employment Rights Directorate, in the Department for Business and Trade. Our directorate plays a pivotal role in delivering the government’s ambitious agenda on improving workers’ rights and implementing the government’s Plan to Make Work Pay.

This role sits at the heart of the Labour Market Participation and Individual Rights Team. Our work is centred on improving labour market participation and helping people to balance their work alongside their personal lives, whether that’s raising a family, caring for a loved one or managing their own health.

The team is responsible for a range of policies that will impact nearly everyone in this country at some point in their lives, including flexible working rights, maternity and paternity leave, and carer’s leave.

The successful candidate will provide support across the team and have the opportunity to get involved with a range of different work. This will include supporting project management for policy development and helping the team to manage logistics for policy engagement.

This role will also take responsibility for producing high quality responses to correspondence and parliamentary questions.

You will join a high-performing team and will work collaboratively with a diverse group of people including colleagues across DBT and in other departments to deliver in fast-moving and often changing circumstances. You will be supported by a friendly leadership team who prioritise inclusion and team development.

The Department for Business and Trade values and promotes learning and development for all its staff. As part of this offer, all our Executive Officer (EO) roles are offered with the opportunity to undertake an apprenticeship. For this role, the apprenticeship we are offering is the policy officer apprenticeship.

You can find more details about this apprenticeship here. If you have any questions about the apprenticeship and what the requirements or eligibility are please contact capabilitydelivery@businessandtrade.gov.uk

The current team are based in our London, Edinburgh, Darlington and Salford offices and we are committed to creating opportunities in the team across the UK. The role may include some UK travel. If the successful candidate is recruited from outside of London the role will require some travel to London.

The core responsibilities of this role will likely involve:

  • Supporting the project management and project reporting for the team's policy development work.
  • Supporting the team to deliver policy engagement, including managing event logistics, team travel plans and recording meeting notes.
  • Drafting high-quality responses to ministerial correspondence and parliamentary questions to help explain our policy work to parliamentarians, their constituents and the wider public.
  • Working with the Deputy Director and the wider team leadership team to support work co-ordination and prioritisation across the team.
  • Providing support to policy development and co-ordination as needed.
  • Supporting information management across the team.
