An esteemed Special Educational Needs (SEN) school group is seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEN Teaching Assistant to join their alternative provision based in Wolverhampton. This is a permanent position, starting in January 2025 or sooner, offering the opportunity to make a profound difference in the lives of young people who require additional support outside of mainstream education.

About the Role:

This alternative provision caters to children and young people with a wide range of needs, including social, emotional, and mental health difficulties (SEMH), autism spectrum conditions (ASC), and learning disabilities. The successful candidate will be working closely with teachers, therapists, and other support staff to deliver tailored educational programs in a nurturing and supportive environment.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate empathy, patience, and the ability to build positive relationships with students who may exhibit challenging behaviours. A background in SEN, especially within alternative provision, is highly valued, and experience with de-escalation techniques is advantageous.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supporting students in their educational, emotional, and social development.
  • Working 1:1 or in small groups to provide tailored interventions and learning support.
  • Assisting the class teacher with the planning and delivery of lessons adapted to meet individual needs.
  • Encouraging positive behaviour and supporting students in managing their emotions and responses.
  • Liaising with parents, carers, and external agencies to ensure the holistic development of each student.
  • Helping to create a safe and inclusive learning environment that encourages progress.

Requirements:

  • Previous experience working with children or young people with SEN, particularly those with SEMH or ASC, in a school or alternative provision setting.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with students, staff, and families.
  • Empathy, patience, and resilience when working with students who may exhibit challenging behaviours.
  • Knowledge of SEN strategies and techniques, such as Team Teach or other de-escalation methods (desirable but not essential).
  • Level 2 or 3 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning or equivalent (desirable).
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team and be flexible to the needs of the provision.
