Senior Biomedical Scientist - Biochemistry

Overall Job Purpose: An experienced Biomedical Scientist to lead a team of staff in a section of the department with responsibility for providing a comprehensive, high quality laboratory medicine service to all HSL clients. The Senior Biomedical Scientist must use a combination of knowledge, decision making, organisational and supervisory skills to ensure that the appropriate testing is performed safely, accurately and in a timely manner, on each sample received.
Main duties 1. To co-ordinate and participate in the routine processing of specimens; and to allocate work to the other BMS and MLA staff to ensure a smooth workflow. 2. To ensure that for each sample the appropriate requested investigations are performed in a timely manner.
3. To ensure that specialised and urgent specimens are appropriately dealt with. 4. To participate in the technical work as required. 5. To ensure appropriate maintenance and safe use of equipment. 6. To assist in the development of rotas in conjunction with the other senior biomedical staff and ensure that they are operated correctly, and to liaise with the other senior BMS staff to provide continuous cover from the start of each day.
7. To co-ordinate adequate supplies of laboratory consumables and reagents and co-ordinate their stock control. 8. To contribute to audit activities. 9. To contribute to the maintenance and development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
10. To be involved in staff recruitment for Medical Laboratory Assistant and Biomedical Scientist grades, and to conduct appraisals as required. 11. To undertake method development and evaluation as directed by departmental manager, with inputting into service development.
