The Acute Care team at the Royal London Hospital are passionate about getting it right for patients and their families. To achieve this, we are looking to appoint an outstanding individual to the post of Healthcare Support Worker within the Acute Admissions Unit (AAU).

We admit patients directly from A&E and ambulatory care to our 52 bedded AAU and aim to provide an exceptional standard of care whilst maintaining the flow of patients throughout the hospital.

We are looking to recruit staff who have experience of delivering care in an acute setting.

You will have excellent communication skills, be caring and compassionate at all times and thrive in a very busy environment.

As a healthcare assistant your role will be to help the qualified nurses assess, plan deliver and evaluate high standards of care to patients.

The applicant needs to demonstrate and establish good clinical skills and show that they could work independently without direct supervision.

Main duties of the job

The Health Care Support Worker is a member of the ward team who implements prescribed

care and undertakes administrative as directed by the registered nurse to:  Assist in the provision of high quality patient care.

 Ensure that patients arriving on the ward are assessed and settled within the department.
 Ensure the department is clean and well stocked.
 Ensure that provision of food and drinks to patients is facilitated.

 Participate in activities/projects that contribute to improved patient care or experience.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the registered nurse the post holder will:  Participate as a member of the team providing the highest standard of patient care ensuring their comfort and safety

 Assist patients with activities of daily living whilst respecting individual needs, dignity and privacy in all necessary activities
 Assist the trained nurses by undertaking basic observations such as temperature, pulse, blood pressure, oxygen saturations, respiratory rate, urine analysis and weights
 Assist and support registered nurses in obtaining specimens such as stool, urine, swabs and MRSA screening
 Assist patients to meet their nutritional requirements, which includes ensuring menus are completed , handing out drinks and food to patients (ensuring they can reach everything and are sat in a good eating position) and where appropriate feed patients
 Undertake height and weight measurement to assist in the calculation of patient body mass
 Assist in ensuring that all patients are screened for MRSA on admission
 Support patients undergoing clinical procedures ensuring their comfort and safety Senior Sister/Senior Charge Nurse

 Communicate using appropriate verbal and nonverbal methods in a variety of
situation that may involve overcoming physical and psychological barriers.
 Under the supervision of a qualified nurse, organise own workload and assist
patients in all activities of daily living
 Provide direct technical assistance to registered nursing staff when required
safely utilising electronic and mechanical/manual equipment
 Undertake and record clinical activities and observation following training and
assessment as directed by the Registered Nurse
 Enter and update patient documentation and records , utilising computerised
information system where required
 Observe for and report any change in the condition of patients to the registered
nurse.
 Report all accidents/incidents to the nurse in charge
 Contribute to the maintenance of work area. E.g. disposal of linen, cleaning and
tidying equipment, effective use of resources
 To deal with patients property in accordance with trust procedure
 To escort patients to other departments if required
 To help reinforce health education advice to patients
 To protect and maintain patient confidentiality at all time
 To carry out all duties in a professional manner, adhering to the policies and
procedure of the Trust and conforming to current legislation concerning Health
and safety at Work
 Be aware of the work in accordance with the policies and procedures of the
Department and the Trust
 Maintain the confidentiality of information concerning patients, staff and other
health care professionals
 Be aware of the work in accordance with trust infection control standards
 Be able to report clinical incidents and be familiar with the DATIX reporting
system
 To undertake any relevant training and to be active in developing knowledge and
skills to support practice, under the guidance of the person in charge
 Deal with telephone enquires sensitively and initiate appropriate action
 Receive and direct patients and their relatives in a helpful manner

 Maintain the clinical area in an organised and professional manner: clean and

tidy, well stocked and in good order
 Keep patient and clerical areas pleasant, safe, clean and tidy
 Ensure equipment is clean and in good working order

 Keep waste to a minimum
