1. 5 hours permanent post working as a support scientist within the Microbiology department.

The Pathology Departments of both North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Trust and South Tees Hospitals NHS Trust are working collaboratively to develop a joint service from all hospital sites. Though the department is based at The James Cook University Hospital, this position may require cross site working as appropriate.

An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Healthcare Science Support Worker (previously known as Medical Laboratory Assistants) to join the Microbiology department.

You will be released for study to achieve this qualification (location to be confirmed)

A high standard of patient confidentiality is required.

The department is UKAS accredited and has IBMS training approval. CPD is actively encouraged.

Main duties of the job

The post holders will be expected to have good IT skills, telephone manner, a flexible approach to working, good manual skills and work with automated equipment to assist Biomedical Scientists in their routine work

Most apprenticeship programmes in the UK are government-funded. To qualify for this funding, you must have been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least three years before starting the apprenticeship. This means living in the UK for the majority of the past three years without significant absences.

Person specification

Knowledge

• Plan and organise time effectively.
• Good communication skills across all staff grades
• Able to work with human tissue or fluids.
• Ability to follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) with precision and accurately perform repetitive tasks.

• Familiar with LEAN principles

Experience

• Experience of electronic data input

Essential

• 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including Mathematics, English Language, and a science subject. Alternatively, an equivalent qualification such as Key Skills at level 2 in Numeracy or NVQ Level 2 or above in a relevant subjects.
• Experience of electronic data input
• Focused on best interests of patients: Calm when under pressure

• Experience of working in a laboratory, with clinical NHS experience as preferable.
• Experience of shift working or out of hours working
• Experience of Quality Management Systems
• Experience of computer packages e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.

Disclosure and Barring Checks (DBS)

It is now the policy of South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust that all successful candidates who are new to the Trust who require DBS clearance for the post they have been offered, are required to pay the cost of their DBS. The method of payment for this is via salary deduction from your first month's pay.
