I am pleased to be recruiting for an Interim Head of Civil Litigation to join one of my large public sector clients in the Birmingham area.

The ideal candidate will have prior experience working within Local Government and a track record of handling large value civil litigation matters, alongside management experience.

This exciting role is to lead and manage 20 lawyers across 2 inhouse legal teams, specialising in PI and civil litigtaion. Work is varied and high value, spanning different areas and clients. This is a great opportunity for an experienced senior solicitor to take on a more complex caseload and manage a larger team.

Duties may include:

  • Acting for maintained Schools and external Partners/external Public Bodies in Civil claims
  • Handling injury and loss/property damage claim work in the personal injury team
  • Advice and Judicial Review against the Home Office, regarding the creation and suitability of contingency hotels for persons seeking Asylum
  • Redesigning internal services to bring debt enforcement work in-house
  • Dealing with harassment claims under the new Intermediate claims track, including its new fixed costs regime
  • Defending and responding to Judicial Review claims, including a recent a challenge against a significant residential development scheme, in which the High Court ruled in our favour at permission stage, and awarded full costs
  • Handling Data Breach claims and conducting formal Mediation as a form of ADR
  • General County Court and High Court litigation, including preparing and authorising Claims, Defences, interim applications/set aside/summary Judgment applications and cost enforcement
  • Advice and conduct of Debt Recovery, including for Benefits overpayments, Adult Social Care accommodation charge Debt, property income Debt, Revenues, and informing commercial decisions on prospects for recovery
  • Handling Property Litigation, including contested lease renewal and forfeiture and possession claims
  • Dealing with adverse Judgments and Bailiffs/High Court Enforcement officers

This role will be for an initial period of 6 months, but may well be extended beyond this period. The ideal candidate would work full time on a hybrid working basis, so candidates must be able to travel to Birmingham weekly.
