Job overview

The Medical Care Group has an exciting opportunity for a 9 month fixed term position for a General Manager, to join the Care Group Leadership Team in Acute and Emergency Care at both York and Scarborough Hospitals.

The Care Group contains a broad and diverse range of Acute, Emergency and Community Services, including the Emergency Department, Acute Medicine, Cardiology, Respiratory, Gastroenterology, Renal medicine, Stroke, Older Peoples Heath and Palliative medicine across North Yorkshire and York.

Alongside the Clinical Director, Associate Chief Operating Officer , Associate Chief AHP and Associate Chief Nurse, you will be responsible for leading a diverse portfolio of services and delivering quality and performance objectives across a range of care services, including the Emergency Department, Acute medicine, Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and will take a lead on behalf of the Associate Chief Operating Officer as Care Group management lead for major trauma and responsible for leading the unplanned care agenda within the care group.

The General Manager is a key senior role within the Care Group and will suit an individual with a strong track record of Senior Operational Leadership and experience within Urgent and Emergency Care Services, who is skilled and confident in leading complex programmes of improvement and can demonstrate credibility with clinical teams.

The ability to deputise for the Associate Chief Operating Officer as and when required will also be essential.

Main duties of the job

The role is an exciting and challenging one and you will work with senior clinicians, Nurses, Allied Health Professionals and other managerial colleagues, to ensure that the services being delivered are safe and of high quality.

In addition, you will ensure mandatory performance standards are being met while all the time taking into account patient needs and views.

It is a hugely exciting time within the Medical Care Group. The General Manager will provide line management of the operational teams within the Acute and Emergency Care directorates on the York site and be responsible for delivery of quality and operational performance standards and objectives.

The General Manager will also participate in the first on call manager role for either the York or Scarborough site where they will act as the on-site Silver Command for the period of their duty.

  • Educated to degree level, equivalent professional qualification or equivalent experience

  • Experience of successful senior management in a complex and multi-disciplinary organisation
  • Knowledge of performance management principles and practice
  • Financial management skills including experience of analysis and interpretation of complex principles and processes linked to income, expenditure and activity data/plans
  • Knowledge and experience of a wide range of management disciplines, including finance, people management, commissioning, risk management, performance management, service improvement, change management and Clinical Governance arrangements (overall equivalent to masters level experience)
  • Experience of operational and business planning and implementation including strategic options appraisal
  • Knowledge of workforce planning principles and practice
  • Responsible for proposing changes to and implementing departmental policies.
  • Understanding of the NHS plan and improvement agenda applicable to acute hospitals and community services
  • Strong analytical skills; literacy, IT and numeracy skills with the ability to produce a range of documents or presentations for a wide variety of audiences
  • Ability to make judgements and decisions leading to resolution through effective negotiation/problem solving
  • Demonstrable breadth and depth of understanding of acute operational issues in the NHS

DBS Checks

Please be aware that all new employees starting work with us will be charged for the cost of their DBS check if it is required for the role. The cost will be deducted from your salary either in 1 payment or over a six month period once you start employment.
