This is a replacement post in Paediatric Intensive Care and Transport Medicine, supporting paediatric intensive care and the Children’s Medical Emergency Transport service (CoMET), based in the Women’s & Children’s Clinical Management Group of the University Hospitals of Leicester.
The successful applicant will join a 1:8 rota of middle grade medical staff and advanced practitioners, supporting the paediatric intensive care transport service and cardiac & critical care services at Leicester Royal Infirmary.
CoMET is hosted by UHL and operates from a central transport hub at Castle Donington alongside the neonatal, adult and ECMO transport teams. The successful applicant will be based at Castle Donington but will have opportunities to rotate to the Leicester General and Cardiac Paediatric Intensive Care.
Main duties of the job
Support the day-to-day running of the clinical activities in the intensive care transport service.
Liaise with referring hospitals regarding retrieval and repatriation of patients. This will include both short trips within the local network and transport of patients to and from hospitals principally within the East Midlands, but our service regularly transports patients to and from anywhere in the United Kingdom and occasionally beyond.
Support the day to day management of patients in the general and cardiac Paediatric Intensive Care Unit. You will become a key member of a highly skilled multidisciplinary team. You will work under the direction of the Paediatric Intensivist.
Participate in the weekly pre-operative cardiac surgery forums, monthly clinical practice and clinical risk meetings, morbidity meetings, and other activities relevant to the running of a high quality critical care service
Participate in audit activities in the directorate relevant to clinical practice
Sustain and develop teaching and research in conjunction with the University of Leicester, and to participate in and fulfil the requirements of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child health CPD scheme (where applicable) or equivalent. It is

This post is suitable for paediatric trainees who are looking to enhance their intensive care and Transport skills in a specialist intensive care/ECMO unit; either as a stand-alone fellowship, an out of programme arrangement or following completion of their CCT.The post holders will receive training in all aspects of paediatric intensive care and transport medicine including management of cardiac critical care and ECMO patients. The successful candidates may also support mobile ECMO retrievals.
Applicants will therefore need to have completed level 1 training (ST4 and above), and ideally have experience in neonatal or paediatric intensive care at registrar level. Previous experience in critical care transport, in the post-operative care of paediatric cardiac patients and experience in ECMO would be an advantage.Applicants from a paediatric or anaesthetic background would be welcome.An appointee will participate in post-graduate and under-graduate teaching and be encouraged to take part in research.
Person specification- Qualifications
- • MB BS or Equivalent
- • Full GMC Registration
- • MRCPCH/FRCA or Equivalent
- • Current APLS/NLS certification • Level 3 Child Protection training
- • Higher degree eg MSc, MD or equivalent
Experience/ Clinical Skills
Essential criteria- • Completed level 1 training (or equivalent) in Paediatrics or Anaesthesia/Intensive Care
- • Experience in neonatal or paediatric intensive care at registrar level
- • Appropriate clinical knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgment to problems; clear, logical thinking/analytical approach; understands evidence based practice
- • Ability to undertake basic and advanced intensive care procedures.
- • Experience of patient retrieval/transport
- • Experience of patient management following cardiothoracic surgery

The Trust will pay for the check initially and the money will then be deducted from your salary over a three month period commencing on your first month's payment.
The current price of a check is £38 for an enhanced and £18 for a standard check.
